Alison Mulvaney / The Artist

The botanical world is intricately explored in the mixed media work of artist and author Alison Mulvaney.

Alison’s work interweaves emotion and the natural world using a muted palette to create a place of sanctuary and freedom of expression.

Through intuition and memory Alison taps into past generations of creatives, particularly the women in her family, as her grounding inspiration. Her work is deeply rooted in traditions of gardening, embroidery and creativity.

About / The Process

Alison uses a variety of mediums in her mixed media art: painting using watercolour & organic inks, drawing with pencil, graphite or charcoal, plus a hint of embroidery, all on beautiful cotton papers.

Alison communicates emotions of calm serenity using many layers and a gently expressive style of splashes and curving and twisting lines. Her work is influenced by Japanese art.

Each piece of art is accompanied by a personal poem that Alison has written. This is an important part of her process as it heightens the narrative of each piece.

Alison shares, “I want my viewers to be walking through my beautiful garden with me & experiencing the serenity & earthiness to be found in both garden & bush near my home.”

Her art practice often begins with a walk through the garden to forage for botanicals in order to make her own organic inks and a walk through the bush for inspiration for drawing.

Alison produces art to create connection and calm within herself and hopefully to help others feel the same sense of peace and serenity when they view her work.
